Massage therapists help people feel better by relieving pain, alleviating stress, and/or helping heal injuries. There are a wide variety of applications for massage therapy. Some of the more common types include relaxation massage (typically performed in a spa setting), sports massage (involving work with athletes), and clinical massage (performed on people who suffer from pain and injuries). Therapists practice in a variety of settings, including massage therapy clinics, physician or chiropractor offices, holistic health clinics, health clubs, nursing homes, hospitals, and sports team facilities. Some have their own portable equipment and do their work at the home or office of their client. Education, Certification, Licensing Training for massage therapists varies widely by state and locality, both in terms of requirements and program accreditation. There are literally hundreds of massage therapy schools, college programs, and training programs throughout the country; however, a choice should not be made without first checking for the licensing requirements of the particular jurisdiction in which a candidate wants to practice. Most massage schools require a high school diploma and many of them arrange internships with local massage practices so that students can gain a valuable amount of practical on-the-job experience. Licensing requirements also vary greatly by state and locality, although most states regulate massage therapy in some fashion. Licensure usually requires some combination of education, experience, and/or the ability to pass an exam. Many jurisdictions recognize the exam-based national certification program offered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) and most states that regulate massage therapists have adopted its exam as their state exam.
