In the situation above, Peter will do better by not calling Mary so many times. The point here is if Mary did not pick up the phone the first time, it is usually not a good idea to keep on calling her. At most, Peter should only call one to two more times just to make sure that Mary did not miss the phone.
However, you do not want to call your lover several times per hour because that is a sign of desperation. Usually in this kind of situation, the more desperate you appear, the more your partner will want to go away.
Of course, what is stated above is just a guideline. Your situation may be different. Maybe the reason why your boyfriend or girlfriend started to become cold is because he/she is undergoing a stressful period and need some support instead.
