Although New York has a reputation for being one of the more expensive cities to visit, those who do their homework will find there are plenty of no-cost and low-cost things to do and see. If you know where to look, the Big Apple is bursting with endless bargains.

Getting around New York is something you will need to consider if you want to see some of the sights. Savvy travellers seeking an insider's perspective can take advantage of countless guided walking tours, many of which are completely free.

Walking is a good way to discover the city and with a good guidebook and map you can navigate your way around with relative ease. Greenwich Village is a good stop as it oozes charm with its winding streets, historic townhouses and creative atmosphere. Wander around Grove and Bedford Street to admire the 19th century feel of the buildings in the area.

You could spend hours strolling around Manhattan's broad avenues, exploring all the nooks and crannies. Lower Manhattan's financial district is a historical hubbub which is jam-packed with free sights and a history dating back to colonial days.

At Federal Hall National Memorial on Wall Street you can pick up a self-guided walking tour brochure. Whilst you’re there take a look at the National Memorial, a columned temple distinguished by a statue of George Washington standing where he took the presidential oath in 1789.

To enjoy panoramic views of Manhattan and the East River take the footpath across the Brooklyn Bridge. Allow thirty minutes to cross and then walk or take the subway back from Brooklyn. Sunset makes a picturesque time to take the trip.

Many of New York’s landmark visitor attractions have a free tour associated with them. The Grand Central Tour runs every Friday at 12.30pm and you can go along to discover the architecture and social history of the surrounding neighbourhood. This award-winning free 90-minute guided walking tour is sponsored by the Grand Central Partnership and is a favourite with tourists and residents alike.

Other free tours include Central Park, the Federal Reserve and Times Square, the latter of which is the perfect place to soak up the bright lights of the city as well as the buzzing atmosphere. It is well worth just taking a walk around and maybe even indulging in a hotdog for a truly authentic experience.

Numerous other New York cultural institutions have free admission on Fridays. The Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and The Museum of the Moving Image are just a few who drop their entry fees to make themselves accessible to everyone.

No trip to New York is complete without seeing the Statue of Liberty. Hop on the free Staten Island Ferry to glimpse a view of this world famous lady, as well as Ellis Island and lower Manhattan.

Last but not least, there are hundreds of cheap New York hotels to choose from so you really can make your stay budget friendly.
